Green politician injured in Lower Saxony

Lower Saxony state MP Marie Kollenrott of the Green Party was injured during an election campaign event – Stuttgarter Zeitung reported.

Police and Green representatives on Saturday evening reported Lower Saxony state MP Marie Kollenrott, 39, was assaulted during an election campaign event in the centre of Göttingen. Collenrott suffered minor injuries to her hands. One arm was bruised and the injury was documented by the police. However, she did not have to go to hospital.

According to police records obtained earlier in the evening, the man, 66, punched the politician several times in the upper body. The police found out his identity and handed over the case to the state security agency.

Preliminary police reports indicate that the man from Göttingen made rude comments about the Greens at an election booth, police said. There was reportedly a short political discussion with the victim. The man then approached the politician and punched the woman in the upper body and walked away. The state MP and a witness reportedly rushed in pursuit and alerted police.

In recent weeks, several attacks on politicians and campaign workers have caused horror across the country. In Dresden, SPD campaigner Matthias Ecke was beaten until he was hospitalised, while local politician Yvonne Mosler from Greens was pushed and threatened as she hung up campaign posters.

In Berlin, a suspect was temporarily placed in a psychiatric hospital after an attack on economic senator Franziska Giffey (SPD).  AfD politicians have also been attacked: a few weeks ago, for example, a member of the state parliament from Lower Saxony.

Dissatisfaction with the political situation in Germany has been growing recently, mainly due to the policies of the ruling SPD party. Wages in Germany are suffering, with people who work in key positions receiving small salaries.
