1.5 million pints of Guinness sold at Dublin Airport in 2024

More than 2.5 million cups of tea and coffee were poured to passengers in Dublin Airport cafes in 2024, meaning a cup of tea or coffee is poured every 12 seconds at the airport, RTE reports.

New figures from airport operator daa also show that Dublin airport bars have sold more than 1.5 million pints of Guinness beer to passengers this year. Meanwhile, Dublin Airport passengers ate a full Irish breakfast on average every minute during the year. The best-selling crisp at the airport this year was Tayto, with more than 500,000 packets sold in the last 12 months.

As for chocolate, Toblerone is a passenger favourite, with 72 tonnes of Toblerone sold this year, the equivalent of 72 family cars.

Dublin Airport will be 85 years old in January and when it first opened in 1940 it was built to accommodate 100,000 passengers a year. According to daa, more than 100,000 passengers have travelled through the airport on more than 171 days this year. Earlier this month, daa confirmed it was applying to increase the passenger limit at Dublin Airport to 36 million per year.

The current passenger limit at Dublin Airport is 32 million a year, which was introduced as part of the authorisation to build a second terminal in 2007.

This Christmas, 1.4 million passengers were due to fly through Dublin Airport, 90,000 fewer than last year due to the introduction of the passenger limit.

Today, daa also reported that almost 19,000 items were handed in to Dublin Airport’s lost and found department in 2024, with 56 per cent of the items handed in being returned to the owner.

The most common item found in the terminals and surrounding areas was luggage – more than 2,300 bags were turned in. More than 1,000 mobile phones and 750 sets of keys were also handed in.

Another frequently lost item at the airport during 2024 was laptops – over 550 were found this year.

A total of 550 wedding and engagement rings were turned in to the airport’s lost and found department this year. More than 100 of those rings remain unclaimed, including many engagement rings, daa reported.
