One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at an underground station in the Bronx Monday night, police said.
Around 4:30 p.m., police officers responded to a 911 call about a shooting at the Mount Eden Avenue station and found six people with gunshot wounds, NYPD Transit Division Chief Michael M. Kemper told reporters at a media briefing Monday night.
All of the victims, four men and two women between the ages of 14 and 71, were taken to local hospitals. One of the victims, a 34-year-old man, died at St. Barnabas Hospital, ABC News reported, citing Kemper.
Police said the injuries of the other victims are not life-threatening. A suspect has not yet been identified.
Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat and a former city police captain, has sought to reassure unnerved commuters by increasing the number of police officers in underground stations.
Fear of underground violence has risen after a number of incidents in recent years, but overall crime in New York City has fallen sharply since spiking at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The number of people shot dead in the city last year was down 39% from 2022. Underground murders also fell last year, from 10 to 5.
