1 million Italians expected to be over 90 years old in next 3 years

The number of Italians over 90 will reach 1 million in the next three years, according to local media.

Citing Italia Longeva, a national association for ageing and active longevity established by the Ministry of Health, media reported that a third of the country’s population would be over 65.

Such a scenario poses a huge need for home care. About six million elderly people are expected to live alone and face the risk of isolation in the next 20 years.

The aging of the population and increase in related diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and dementia require us to strengthen and expand home care services.

According to the Italia Longeva, currently 64% of people with dementia, one of the first causes of loss of independence among the elderly, are not cared for in socio-medical institutions. This places a heavy burden on Italian families.
