2023 on track to be China’s warmest year since 1951

China’s average temperature in 2023 will be 10.71 Celsius, the highest level since the country began keeping official meteorological records in 1951.

Jia Xiaolong, deputy director of the National Climate Centre at the CMA, said that amid global warming, China’s average temperature last year was 0.82 degrees Celsius higher than the all-time high.

He also said 127 weather stations across the country reported daytime temperatures exceeding or matching the highest temperatures in history over the past year.

The report also noted that China’s average rainfall in 2023 will be 615 millimetres, 3.9 percent less than the country as a whole. This is the second lowest level since 2012.

Last year, the country also experienced 37 regional-level rainstorms that caused flooding in some areas, while southwest China’s Yunnan province experienced its worst meteorological drought since 1961.
