2024 recorded Greece’s warmest summer, winter

According to Greece’s meteorological service, the country experienced its warmest summer and winter on record in 2024.

The highest temperature this year – 44.5 degrees Celsius (112.1 degrees Fahrenheit) – was recorded on June 13 in Voukolies, located on the island of Crete. According to the report, the summer of 2024 had the highest temperature records of all time.

With an average temperature of 26.2 degrees this summer, the country has seen an increase of 2.3 degrees in average summer temperatures since 1960. The average temperature reached in the summer of 2024 was recorded 1 degree higher than in 2012, when the previous summer temperature record was broken.

The lowest temperature last year, excluding ski resorts, was recorded on January 22 in Neos Kafkasos (Florian) at minus 19.8 degrees Celsius.

On December 1, the peninsula of Simonopetra Athos received the highest rainfall of the year at 435 millimetres (17.13 inches). The highest rainfall for the year was recorded at Askifou in Crete with 2,160 millimetres. In addition, a total of nine people died due to extreme weather conditions.
