21 dead, 14 injured as bus falls off cliff in Sri Lanka

A bus accident in central Sri Lanka has resulted in 21 fatalities and left 14 others injured.

The incident occurred early on Sunday near the town of Kotmale, around 140 kilometres east of the capital, Colombo. The bus skidded off the road and fell into a ravine. Local police confirmed that approximately 50 passengers were on board.

Prasanna Gunasena, the Deputy Minister for Transport and Highways, reported that 21 people died, and 14 others were taken to hospital for treatment.

Footage from the scene showed the overturned bus at the bottom of the cliff, with rescue workers and locals helping to rescue the injured.

The driver, who was also injured, was among those hospitalised. The bus was operated by a state-run company.

Bus accidents are unfortunately common in Sri Lanka, particularly in mountainous regions, due to poor road conditions and reckless driving.
