3 people stabbed at London’s Notting Hill Carnival

Three people were stabbed at the Notting Hill Carnival in London, including a 32-year-old woman who is in a critical condition, the Metropolitan Police said on Monday.

The incident was one of several incidents of violence at the West London festival, which is expected to attract about 1 million people on Sunday and Monday.

Two men, a 29-year-old and a 24-year-old, were also stabbed at the event on Sunday night, but police said the woman’s condition was critical.

As of Sunday evening, police had made 90 arrests, 18 of which were for possession of a dangerous weapon. Police also said 15 police officers, who were part of a 7,000-strong patrol force meant to ensure public safety, were attacked during the carnival.

Despite the festive atmosphere enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people, police said some carnival goers used the carnival to commit crimes.

To address these concerns, the Metropolitan has significantly increased its police presence in a bid to ensure safety while being ready to take strong action against those intent on violence.

Notting Hill Carnival has been held every year since 1964. In 2018, 373 people were arrested over two days during the Afro-Caribbean Carnival.
