Since Thursday, Syrian security forces and their allies have killed 340 civilians from the Alawite minority, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. This violence follows attacks by supporters of the former Assad regime.
The Observatory stated that in recent days, security forces and their allies killed 340 Alawite civilians in Syria’s coastal regions and the Latakia mountains. The deaths resulted from executions carried out by security personnel and pro-government fighters. In addition, they looted homes and properties in these areas.
Challenges for Syria’s new leadership
Restoring security remains a significant challenge for Syria’s new leadership. After Islamist-led forces ousted Assad in December, the new government faced strong resistance from the Alawite community. This community, which historically supported the Assad regime, has led to a large-scale military operation along Syria’s Mediterranean coast.
The government’s actions have sparked intense clashes, further complicating efforts to bring stability to the region. The Observatory reported that many of these deaths occurred during violent confrontations on Thursday.
Rising death toll among Alawite and pro-Assad forces
The total death toll now stands at 553, including 93 members of the new government’s security forces and 120 pro-Assad fighters. This data, provided by the Observatory, highlights the scale of the ongoing violence.
On Saturday, state news agency SANA reported an attack on the national hospital in Latakia by remnants of the deposed regime. Security forces successfully repelled the attack.
In his Friday speech, Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa urged insurgents to surrender, stating, “You attacked all Syrians and made an unforgivable mistake. The riposte has come, and you have not been able to withstand it.”
The international community, including Western powers and Syria’s neighbours, has stressed the need for unity within the new government. Rebuilding the country after years of civil war is now a top priority for Syria.
The Syrian Observatory has reported multiple massacres in recent days, with many women and children among the victims.
The Observatory also stated that most of the victims were executed by forces linked to the Ministry of Defence and the Interior. Activists released footage showing bodies of civilians outside a house, with blood stains nearby. Some videos also appeared to show military personnel shooting people at close range.
