Two earthquakes with magnitudes of 3.9 and 6.2 have struck in the Sea of Marmara, a few dozen kilometres from Istanbul, Turkish media reported on Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses publish video of the aftermath of the earthquake in Turkey: the footage shows panic in the streets of the city and people running out of buildings.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck in the Sea of Marmara, off the coast of Istanbul province.
The republic’s Disaster and Emergency Situations Directorate warned that more tremors were possible. Residents were urged not to enter damaged buildings or be near dangerous objects.
So far, there have been no reports of damage or casualties, but civil defence services are continuing to monitor the situation. Residents are advised to remain calm, follow official information and take precautions. At the same time, citizens are advised not to occupy long conversations on mobile operator lines and keep in touch by sms.
In February 2023, Turkey was hit by earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5. As a result, more than 53 thousand people died, some cities were completely destroyed.
