The heaviest rains may have already passed, but forecasters warn that the coming week is expected to be noticeably colder with below average temperatures across much of the UK.
More than 1,800 homes have been flooded after heavy and intense downpours caused by Storm Henk.
Katharine Smith, the Environment Agency’s duty flood manager, said significant flooding was expected this weekend “across parts of the River Thames in Oxfordshire as well as the River Trent near Nottingham, and the River Severn, including Gloucester.”
Michael Gove, Minister for Communities, and Steve Barclay, Minister for the Environment, announced that residents affected by flooding caused by Storm Henk could apply for financial assistance for recovery. As a result, households will be able to apply for up to £500 and SMEs will be able to apply for up to £2,500.
Residents and businesses continued to deal with the flooding on Sunday, with many turning to websites such as GoFundMe for help.
The effects of flooding are expected to continue in the Midlands, Lincolnshire and on the River Thames until Monday, the agency said, but added that the risks from Henk flooding this weekend are being reduced.
