Dozens of people were also injured after a mudslide in a mountainous area on a road connecting major cities.
The death toll was reported Saturday by the Choco state governor’s office, where a unified command centre has been set up to coordinate search and rescue operations. The statement said 17 bodies have been identified and 17 are yet to be identified.
Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez said in a post on X that searches were continuing and that there were children among the victims.
It is not yet known what exactly may have caused the mudslide, but the defence ministry said Friday night that it had been raining in the area, hampering rescue operations.
President Gustavo Petro said his government would provide all necessary support to the victims.
