Pashinyan: Armenia needs new Constitution

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Friday that his country needed a new constitution to strengthen its “democratic aspirations”, Reuters reports.

At a meeting at Armenia’s Justice Ministry, Pashinyan said:

We must have a Constitution that will make the Republic of Armenia more competitive and more viable in the new geopolitical and regional conditions.

During his nearly six-year rule, Pashinyan has repeatedly called for major changes to the Armenian constitution. He has made contradictory statements about which articles of the constitution he believes should be changed.

Two years ago, he created a new body charged with coordinating the constitutional reform process. This body, headed by Justice Minister Grigor Minasyan, has yet to draft a single constitutional amendment. Minasyan said on 8 January that a “concept” for constitutional reform would be developed in the next few months.
