144 votes in favour, 109 against Milei’s economic reform bill

Argentine lawmakers approved libertarian President Javier Milei’s sweeping economic reform bill, setting the stage for a crucial vote in the Senate.

The past few days have been plagued by demonstrations against Milei’s reforms, with protesters repeatedly clashing with riot police, using physical force.

Despite this, Argentina’s lower house of parliament has given its general approval to President Javier Milei’s sweeping comprehensive reform bill after days of debate, paving the way for a decisive vote in the Senate with 144 votes in favour, 109 against.

In addition, during the debate, MPs from the main centre-left Peronist opposition bloc Union por la Patria vehemently rejected Milei’s policies, while his supporters urged them not to obstruct the bill’s passage.

The bill is a key part of Milei’s plans to reform Argentina’s struggling economy, with inflation exceeding 200 percent, foreign exchange reserves depleted and creditors and investors unable to repay debt.

The economic reform bill is the first major challenge for the president since he took office in December after a shock election victory.
