EU Commission president: I tend to forget that, but Brexit was the first month of my mandate

Ursula von der Leyen announced her candidacy this week to lead the EU executive branch for another five years, according to Politico.

The Commission president told reporters in Brussels on Wednesday about the main challenges she faced from 2019, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. In September last year, Von der Leyen forgot about Brexit during her annual speech to the European Parliament.

From the beginning… the mandate… was very challenging. It started actually with Brexit — I tend to forget that — but this was the first month of my mandate.

The appointment of the European Commission president will be decided after June elections by the EU’s 27 national leaders. The European People’s Party, led by Ursula von der Leyen, declared on Wednesday that she was their only candidate, meaning she would be backed at the party congress in Bucharest in early March.
