Foreign Minister Melanie Joly announced new sanctions against Russia in coordination with the Unites States, the United Kingdom, concurrently the European Union also announced new sanctions on Friday.
“We will continue to use disruptive measures against the Russian government, targeting its ability to wage its illegal war until Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are fully restored,” Melanie Joly said in a media statement.
The Russian embassy in Ottawa, for its part, immediately rejected the sanctions:
“Another round of sanctions by the Trudeau cabinet is meaningless, just like all previous measures of this kind,” it said on X, adding that “Russian citizens and organizations couldn’t care less.”
Similar statements were posted by Russian missions in London and Brussels, while on Friday Britain added about 50 names to its sanctions list and the European Union added nearly 200 to its list
The rules were expanded for the 59th time on Friday, this time with Putin’s long-time aide and businessmen from the railway, construction and IT sectors coming under sanctions.
