European countries spent 58 billion euros on arms purchases in 2022, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said.
“Keep in mind one figure: in 2022 the defence investment of our member states amounted to 58 billion.”
Despite record spending, the head of the European diplomacy admitted that Europe’s defence industry still lacks funding not only to help Ukraine, but even to meet the increased demand for weapons among Western countries.
Looking for a solution to this problem, the European official again drew attention to frozen Russian assets. According to Borrell, Europe is now considering the possibility of using the profits from them not only to rebuild Ukraine but also to provide military aid to Kyiv.
