Iran reserves right to respond to Israeli threat – envoy

Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Saeed Iravani categorically rejected on Thursday the accusations against Iran made by his Israeli counterpart at the UN.

Iravani stated that in a letter from Israel’s representative to the United Nations dated 22 February, 2024, and addressed to the President of the Security Council, Israel’s top diplomat “resorted to lies, spread misinformation, and leveled unfounded allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

The Iranian envoy stressed that the letter constituted “yet another cynical attempt” to divert the attention of the international community from “the ongoing egregious atrocities and acts of genocide” committed against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. He also accused Israel of attempting to cover up and “legitimise” Israel’s actions against Lebanon and “continual breaches of international law, the United Nations Charter, and UNSC Resolutions 1559 (2004) and 1701 (2006) by leveling unfounded allegations against Iran.”

Responding to Israeli moves in the region, the envoy warned that “the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves its legitimate and inherent right, in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter, to take all necessary measures to respond to any threat or attack” by Israeli forces against its national security and interests as well as against its people.

Iran also “reaffirms the inherent right of the Syrian Arab Republic and Lebanon” to take all necessary measures to respond to any threat or attack and “acts of aggression” by Israel against their sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity in accordance with international law, Iravani noted.

I should be grateful if you would circulate the present letter as a document of the Security Council.
