Either war with Russia or long-term ceasefire in Ukraine, Serbian President says

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on Friday that the world is facing two possible scenarios: the start of a third world war through a clash with Russia or a long-term ceasefire in Ukraine with the support of China and the US.

Vučić said the following about the first scenario at a press conference in Belgrade with the president of the German state of Bavaria, Markus Soder:

One scenario is whether the West will go in the direction of a full conflict with Russia, since it is not entirely easy to stop the Russian army on the ground.

Regarding the second scenario, which concerns the resolution of the conflict, he stressed the important role of China and the US:

And the second is that with the help of the United States of America and China, some kind of long-term truce, if not permanent peace, would be established, which would mean a huge relief for the world.

The Serbian President emphasised that in case the conflict continues and turns into a sharper confrontation, no one and nothing will be gained.

Vučić further reiterated the importance for Serbia to become a member of the EU. According to him, it is important for Serbia, as the strongest country in the Balkans, with European traditions, to be a strong and good partner.

Bavaria supported the aspiration of the largest country in the Balkans: ”We are strongly advocating for Serbia to join the European Union. It would be a great shame for Europe, but I think also for Serbia, if you didn’t go that way,” according to Soder.

Soder said that Bayern will open a representative office in Belgrade, which will be responsible for the development of economic, scientific and technical co-operation. For his part, Vučić said that co-operation with Bavaria is important for Serbia, as Bavarian companies employ 25,000 people in Serbia.
