Civil servants walked off the job Thursday because of a 24-hour strike that disrupted public transport, according to AP.
Public employee unions have gone on strike demanding the repeal of a labour law that they believe encroaches on their rights instead of the promised market flexibility.
The Athens metro was to be closed for the duration of the strike, and the capital’s trams and trolleybuses were to work only part of the day. Doctors and nurses of state medical institutions also went on strike.
However, flights continued as usual after the participation of air traffic controllers was deemed illegal.
Hundreds of strikers marched through the city centre in two separate demonstrations. Blocked roads and disruption of public transport have hampered traffic in Athens.
