The European Union supports Ukraine because it is in the interests of the association, European diplomacy chief Josep Borrell told CNN.
Josep Borrell said:
“It’s not just a question of generosity. It’s not about supporting Ukraine because of love for the Ukrainian people. It’s in our interests and also in the interests of the United States.”
Borrell emphasised that the US would suffer “huge losses” if Russia wins. That is why Brussels urges Washington to agree on a new aid package for Kyiv as soon as possible, Borrel added.
Since autumn 2023, the US Congress has been unable to agree on aid for Kyiv. Consideration of the project in the House of Representatives is blocked by its speaker Mike Johnson. Congressmen are taking measures to start voting to bypass the Speaker, The Washington Post reported in mid-March.
Earlier, the White House announced a $300m emergency package for Ukraine. The US presidential aide for national security, Jake Sullivan, noted that it would not last long:
“We are not talking about months – we are talking about weeks, more like a couple of weeks”.
