HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), which controls South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai, is considering all kinds of technologies to reduce emissions in future newbuildings, including investing huge sums in research into various new forms of propulsion, from ammonia to nuclear.
The latest research activity focuses on the electrification of marine engines and equipment using energy-efficient power semiconductor technology. HD KSOE is already concentrating on creating shipboard technologies utilising electricity and hydrogen.
As a consequence, KSOE is signing a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s Infineon Technologies to develop this area. According to a statement from both companies, power semiconductors from Infineon could prove to be a factor in ensuring precise control of multiple power modules such as high power drives.
The company will now work with Infineon to create power solutions for propulsion technology, which is a key element of ship electrification. The German company will provide technical assistance and mentoring in semiconductor power modules and system solutions.
“At Infineon we are providing the technologies needed in today’s world of transportation to drive electrification that will shape the future of mobility,” said Dr Peter Wawer, president of green industrial power at Infineon Technologies.
