Morocco, Italy sign deal to recruit seasonal workers in Sicily

Moroccan nationals will be able to be trained in their home country for seasonal work in Italy, Schengen Visa Info reports.

The training of Moroccans to provide them with employment opportunities in Sicily has been made possible thanks to a memorandum of understanding signed by the labour collectives of Sicily and Morocco – the Association of Foreign Workers of Sicily, the Consortium of Human Solidarity and the General Union of Moroccan Workers – on 28 March 2024.

Under the agreement reached, Moroccan workers will be able to undergo vocational training, upon completion of which they will be entitled to seasonal employment in Sicily, particularly in the Bronte and Valledolmo factories.

Although the whole process of training and employment will take some time, the General Union of Moroccan Workers will definitely support and train Moroccan workers, which will be offered by Migrant.Work.

Commenting on the deal, Paolo Ragusa, head of the Foreign Workers Association, said that they want to offer migrants alternative options to safely come to the country to work.

Sicily’s social policy councillor Nuccia Albano also commented on the issue. She believes that foreign workers coming to Sicily to work will be integrated into companies faster as they will have the necessary qualifications.

Migrant.Work will offer training to foreigners and its website will allow Italian employers to enter all their preferences and find workers who meet their requirements. As explained by Migrant.Work, each type of training has a different duration. It reports that courses in first aid, fire safety, electricians and repairmen are offered, among others.

Due to labour shortages, Italy will welcome more than 89,050 people this year. Most of them will be granted a six- or nine-month visa that will allow them to legally live and work in Italy.
