Taiwan detects 7 Chinese naval ships, 3 military aircraft around nation

The Ministry of National Defence (MND) tracked seven Chinese naval vessels and three military aircraft near Taiwan between 6 a.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday, Asian media reported.

Taiwan Ministry of National Defence posted on X:

“3 PLA aircraft and 7 PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. today. ROC (Taiwan) Armed Forced have monitored the situation and employed appropriate forces to respond.”

According to MND, of the three Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, none crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait or entered the southwest corner of the country’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ).

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defence said that on April 3, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defence detected 30 Chinese warplanes and nine naval vessels operating in the country’s vicinity between 6am Tuesday morning and 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.

In official post on X, the Taiwan Ministry of National Defence said:

“30 PLA aircraft and 9 PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. today. 20 of the aircraft entered Taiwan’s northern, middle line, and SW ADIZ. ROC Armed Forces have monitored the situation and employed appropriate force to respond.”

Taiwan tracked seven Chinese naval vessels and six military aircraft across the country amid escalating tensions in the Strait region on Tuesday. Taiwan has tracked Chinese warplanes 39 times and naval vessels 20 times this month, according to Asian media.

Since September 2020, China has stepped up its use of grey zone tactics, gradually increasing the number of warplanes and naval vessels operating around Taiwan.

Grey zone tactics are defined as “an effort or series of efforts beyond sustained deterrence and assurances that seek to achieve security objectives without resorting to the direct and significant use of force.”
