Shipbuilder A&P Group to close shipyard in north-east England, leading to job cuts

A five-acre British shipyard in north-east England, mainly focused on ship repair, with two dry docks and 240 metres of quay is closing down, Splash reported.

Shipbuilding has been taking place on the former Smiths Dock site since the early 1900s. A&P took over the site in 2003 following the collapse of Cammell Laird.

Employees at the Tees facility are offered jobs at another nearby A&P yard, but still A&P has two other yards in England.

Two years ago the UK government unveiled a £4 billion plan to revitalise shipbuilding and coastal communities in the National Shipbuilding Strategy Refresh.
