Turkish FM to meet Dutch counterpart, discuss global conflicts

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will meet with his Dutch counterpart Hanke Bruins Slot on Friday as part of a visit to the Netherlands to mark the tenth Wittenburg Conference between the two countries, Turkish media reported.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement:

“Minister Fidan and his Dutch counterpart will exchange views on bilateral relations, Turkey-EU relations, and regional developments.”

During the talks, Fidan is expected to express his views and expectations regarding Turkey’s EU accession process, as well as the renewal of the Customs Union between the two sides and visa liberalisation for Turkish citizens.

The two representatives will discuss issues concerning the Turkish community in the Netherlands, including past incidents in which the holy book of Muslims, the Quran, was desecrated by far-right figures.

Fidan will discuss Turkey’s expectations regarding counter-terrorism efforts and recent developments in the neighbouring region, including Israel-Palestine, Ukraine and Cyprus. Fidan is also scheduled to meet with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

The Wittenburg conference, which took place in the Netherlands on Tuesday, included six working groups focusing on Turkey-EU relations; the Turkish-Dutch community; security; counterterrorism; illegal migration, sustainable solutions and energy transition; and the reconstruction of southern Turkey, which was hit by strong earthquakes last February, the ministry added.
