Italy’s peace movements calling on country to “get out of war”

Anti-war movements and organisations calling for an end to armed conflicts, such as the Israel-Hamas war and the war in Ukraine, are gaining momentum around the world, with Italian peace activists urging the government to stop supporting the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Former member of the European Parliament and Italian politician, Michele Santoro, urged on social network X, formerly Twitter, to “get out of the war as the Constitution requires.”

What I propose is to get out of the war as the Constitution requires.

Santoro argued that European leaders would have “the moral authority to initiate a peace table with the super powers” if they stopped supporting wars.

“The alternative? American missiles, deaths, economic crisis, destruction of the world. The choice is yours.”

Previously, Italy hosted a Rome peace conference dedicated to armed regional conflicts and a peaceful rally in the city of Bologna.

The conference addressed the future of Palestine and current conflicts around the globe. The meeting, hosted by Italian and European peace activists, was attended by representatives from the US, the UK, Russia, South Korea, Lebanon, Palestine, and Georgia.

Peace advocates marched through the streets of Bologna on April 25, carrying flags and placards, calling on the Italian and EU leadership to cease the military “fever” sweeping European countries.
