Trump overtakes Biden in US presidential race

A preliminary ABC News/Washington Post poll reveals Republican nominee Donald Trump has a 10-point lead over Joe Biden in the presidential election scheduled for 2024.

The latest preliminary poll also showed Joe Biden’s approval rating down 19 points from the previous ABC News/Washington Post poll.

His ratings on the US economy and immigration also declined compared to the previous survey. 44 percent of US citizens claimed that their financial situation had worsened during the presidency of Joe Biden.

Only 30 per cent of those polled approved of Biden’s economic efforts. On immigration controls at the US-Mexico border, support for the incumbent president fell to 23 per cent.

The ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 37 percent of people approve of Biden’s work overall, while 56 percent are dissatisfied with his performance.

74 percent of respondents said Joe Biden is too old for a second term as the President of the United States. However, the opinion that Trump is too old has also increased.

When asked about a possible government shutdown in the United States, 40 percent said they would blame Democrats in Congress for this, and 33 percent said they would blame Republicans.

Asked about a possible government shutdown in the US, 40 per cent said they would blame Democrats in Congress, while 33 per cent said they would hold Republicans responsible.

Donald Trump’s approval rating has improved, a poll shows. In 2021, when he left the US presidency, only 38 per cent of US citizens approved of his job performance. Now this figure has risen to 48 per cent.

However, the majority of Americans still do not believe his claim of a stolen election. Instead, 60 per cent of Americans believe that Biden has won legitimately, with another 12 finding it difficult to answer. 28 per cent believe Biden has not won legitimately.

US PRESIDENTIAL POLLS

62 Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said they want to see someone other than Biden as their candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

8 per cent supported current US Vice President Kamala Harris, 8 per cent backed Bernie Sanders and 7 per cent expressed confidence in Robert F Kennedy Jr.

At the same time, 54 percent of Republicans and other pro-Republican independents support Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election.

In a hypothetical November contest, Trump is expected to have 51 percent support and Biden 42 percent, which would mean a three-point increase for Trump and a two-point drop for Biden in the ABC/Washington Post poll conducted in February 2023.

The results show Trump’s support is skyrocketing, with more than 50 per cent support suggesting a closer contest than before, which also indicates Americans are more interested in the 2024 election.
