About 5,000 ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh have already arrived in Armenia fearing persecution of Azerbaijanis after the Sept. 19, according to Arka News Agency.
The Government provides accommodation to all refugees who do not have a predetermined place of residence in Armenia. The Government reports that the needs of all refugees are now being recorded with a view to assisting them.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a live broadcast on Sunday that “Armenia will gladly receive our brothers and sisters from Nagorno-Karabakh”. He emphasised that Armenians there were still at risk of ethnic cleansing.
The US and EU have expressed “deep concerns” for the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, which is recognised internationally as part of Azerbaijan but had been under Armenian control.
More than 6,000 people died in a war three years ago which saw Azerbaijan regain parts of the region and surrounding territories that had been under Armenian control since 1994.
