Poland finds bugging devices in government meeting room

Polish security agents found bugging devices in the room where the ministerial meeting was to be held Tuesday, AP News reports.

The cabinet was meeting in Katowice, a southwestern Polish city where Donald Tusk was attending an economic conference.

Jacek Dobrzyński, a spokesman for the head of Poland’s secret services, said a routine security check uncovered equipment that could have been used for recording or eavesdropping.

He wrote on social media on Tuesday morning that “the State Protection Service, in cooperation with the Internal Security Agency, detected and dismantled devices that could be used for eavesdropping in the room where the meeting of the Council of Ministers is to be held today in Katowice.” He also added:

The services are conducting further activities in this matter.

The Cabinet of Ministers traditionally holds weekly meetings in Warsaw, but exceptionally held them in Katowice due to the European Economic Congress taking place there, where European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a speech.

Ministers were due to discuss energy policy, including coal phase-out and a programme to mitigate the impact of high electricity prices on vulnerable households. Tusk and government ministers travelled to Katowice by train on Tuesday morning.
