Norway bans entry to most Russian tourists

Norway announced that it would ban almost all Russian tourists from entering the country in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to Politico.

The northern NATO member, which shares a land border with Russia, initially imposed visa restrictions against Russia in 2022. The country will now tighten access from May 29, Minister of Justice and Public Security Emilie Enger Mehl said on Thursday.

The decision to tighten the entry rules are in line with the Norwegian approach of standing by allies and partners in the reactions against Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.

Under the new rules, Russians travelling for tourism or other non-essential reasons will be denied permission to cross the border, the ministry said.

Exceptions will be made in some cases, for example, to visit close relatives living in Norway, as well as Russian citizens who work or study in Norway or other Schengen countries.
