Over 300 people and over 1,100 homes were buried in a massive landslide in Papua New Guinea, Reuters reported.
Hundreds of people are feared dead after a landslide hit Kaokalam village in Enga province, about 600 kilometres (370 miles) northwest of the capital Port Moresby, at around 3 am on Friday (19:00 GMT on Thursday).
The landslide in the Pacific country north of Australia buried more than 300 people and 1,182 homes, the Papua New Guinea Post Courier reported. Upwards of six villages have been affected by a landslide near Mulitaka province, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said on Saturday.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported today, As a result, access to the highway was blocked, so the only way to reach the area was by helicopter. Earlier, rescuers recovered four bodies from underground. However, there are still fears that casualties in the region will rise.
Prime Minister James Marape said officials from the Disaster Management Service, the Defence Force and the Ministry of Works and Highways were helping with relief and recovery efforts.
