Record high temperature was recorded in the capital New Delhi due to the abnormal heat wave prevailing in some parts of India, officials reported. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a temperature of 49.9 C (121.8 F) in two districts of New Delhi on Tuesday. Experts detected the all-time high temperature in the Mungeshpur and Narela suburbs of the capital city.
The previous record was 49.2 C (121.8 F) in 2022.
Several other Indian cities exceeded 49°C (120.2°F). North Indian states, such as Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi, are also experiencing heat waves. In Churu in western Rajasthan state, temperatures reached 50.5°C (122.9°F).
Power infrastructure in some areas struggled to cope with the load as people tried to maintain coolness. In Delhi, electricity department officials also stated that the increased use of air conditioners had caused electricity demand to soar to record highs.
The IMD warned that the intense heat could affect health, especially of children, the elderly and people with chronic diseases. The weather can also cause heat stroke and water shortages.
Due to severe water shortage, tens of millions of people in India do not have running water. According to Atishi Marlena Singh, a senior minister in the city’s government, some parts of Delhi are having trouble accessing water, while others have no water at all.
To address the problem of water scarcity, we have taken a slew of measures such as reducing water supply from twice a day to once a day in many areas. The water thus saved will be rationed and supplied to the water-deficient areas where supply lasts only 15 to 20 minutes a day.
The Health Department confirmed that four cases of heat stroke deaths in Jaipur.
The IMD stated that the heat wave was likely to gradually diminish in northwest and central India from May 30. The temperature was about 9 degrees Celsius higher than expected for this time of the year, it added.
