China urged Taipei to firmly resist separatism over Taiwan independence

China firmly stands against separatists’ attempt to achieve Taiwan independence in any form, according to Chinese media.

Beijing has “firm determination, sufficient confidence and strong capability” to thwart any efforts by Taiwanese separatists to achieve independence, senior official Wang Huning stressed on Saturday. According to Wang, the speech delivered by Xi Jinping in April highlighted the course of the relations between the two sides.

“No matter how the situation in the Taiwan Strait changes, the fact that both sides belong to one China cannot be denied,” Wang said in his opening speech at the annual Straits Forum, held in the southeastern port city of Xiamen in Fujian province.

The top diplomat urged people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to shoulder their historical and national responsibilities, firmly oppose separatism and foreign interference. Similarly, he encouraged to steadfastly protect the common homeland of the Chinese nation, promote peace and tranquility, and develop relations to put the two sides on the path of better relations together, CGTN reported.

Wang said separatists seeking Taiwan independence undermine peace and stability between the two sides. They harm the interests and well-being of Taiwan residents and jeopardise national sovereignty and territorial integrity, he added. In addition, he warned their actions would push Taiwan to the brink of war and bring disaster to the island’s residents.

He pledged the mainland would continue to strengthen the interests and welfare of the people of Taiwan. China also intends to attract more people to participate in cooperation and integrated development between the two sides of the strait, according to him.
