Trump in Detroit to peel black voters from Biden

Former US President Donald Trump travelled to the city of Detroit, taking part in a community forum, Reuters reported.

Donald Trump was in the city of Detroit, Michigan, on Saturday, taking part in a public forum as part of an effort to alienate black voters from President Joe Biden ahead of the November election. Trump’s appearance at a church for black people drew local residents and staunch supporters at the same time. The street in front of the church closed off to police, but there were no signs of protest.

Joe Biden and Donald Trump regard the state of Michigan as a must-win state because every vote can make a difference. Trump’s campaign says there is an opportunity to get black voters on his side, especially men who may find themselves attracted to the former president’s stance.

Detroit is a city that Trump slandered as “corrupt” four years ago, saying the 2020 election results there could not be trusted. On Saturday, however, Trump sat on stage at a table surrounded by a group of local community members, including small business owners and activists.

Crime, according to him, was “most rampant here, in African-American communities,” adding that the “Black population wants law enforcement more than any other.” He also promised to revitalise the local auto industry in Detroit by imposing tariffs on cars made in Mexico and other countries.

The event bore a different resemblance to a typical Trump rally. While some ardent MAGA supporters adorned with caps waited for hours to get in, the line numbered in the hundreds, not thousands, and some attendees said they ended up at the venue by accident. It brought in a diverse audience of black and white people, which may have a positive impact.
