Armenia seeks the European Union for help to cope with an influx of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh as Azerbaijan launched a special operation in the region last week, informed by the Italian Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday.
Nagorno-Karabakh, populated by Armenian Christians who set up the self-proclaimed republic three decades ago after an ethnic conflict at the time of the Soviet Union’s collapse, is internationally recognised territory of Azerbaijan.
More than 100,000 refugees have come to Armenia, the head of the U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) said late on Friday.
Armenia has asked the European Union to provide temporary shelters and medical supplies, the Italian prime minister’s office said in a statement, adding that Rome is working to promote stabilisation in the region.
