Magnitude 7.3 earthquake rocks Chile

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck northern Chile late Thursday night, according to the US Geological Survey.

The earthquake struck 45 kilometres (28 miles) east-southeast of the coastal town of San Pedro de Atacama at a depth of 117.4 kilometres (73 miles) at 9:50 p.m. local time (01:50 GMT Friday).

There were no reports of casualties or significant damage. Authorities also stated that there was no tsunami threat from the quake.

Chile, one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, is located in the Pacific Belt, also known as the Ring of Fire.

More than 500 people died as a result of the magnitude 8.8 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck Chile on 27 February 2010.
