Harris to hold rally in Philadelphia with her vice presidential candidate

US Vice President Kamala Harris will hold her first rally with her new vice presidential running mate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, according to Reuters.

She will begin her four-day tour, which includes Michigan and Arizona, on Tuesday, 6 August. The starting point suggests that Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has moved to the top of the short list of candidates for the nomination.

After Philadelphia, Harris and her vice president-elect would travel to six other locations, including western Wisconsin, Detroit, and Las Vegas, the campaign stated. It also said Harris had so far “made no decision on a running mate.”

Harris is expected to announce her decision as early as Monday, ahead of Tuesday’s event, sources said. The short list of candidates under consideration includes Shapiro, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, US Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

Normally, campaigns start considering their vice presidential choice after the preliminary race ends in the spring, giving months to vet candidates and decide whom the nominee best meshes with personally and politically. Harris, however, is forced to choose her vice presidential candidate on a very limited timeline.

Eric Holder Jr, the former attorney general who led the vice-presidential vetting process for Barack Obama in 2008, is reportedly vetting Harris’ candidates through his law firm Covington & Burling.

Shapiro gave a rousing speech about Harris in the Philadelphia suburbs on Monday.

She’s not only ready, she’s damned ready. And you know who else knows she’s ready? Donald Trump knows she’s ready.
