Turkish security forces arrest key PKK member

The Turkish security forces arrested a member of the PKK terrorist organisation’s branch in Austria, Yeni Safak reported.

Security sources said on Saturday that security forces tracked down Hidir Korkut when he entered Turkey on July 22 and detained him in a joint operation by the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and the Izmir Security Directorate.

He went into custody and then formally arrested after appearing before a local court judge. Korkut participated in planning terrorist attacks and sabotage operations. He had most recently been living in Austria.

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a Kurdish paramilitary organisation fighting for the political rights of Kurds in Turkey but recognised as a terrorist organisation by the European Union and the United States, has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children and infants, in its 40 years of activity.
