New Banksy artwork appears on shutter at London Zoo

Another Banksy artwork appeared on the shutters of London Zoo on Tuesday, depicting a gorilla lifting the shutters to let some animals out. It is the ninth work to appear in the UK capital in recent days and will be the latest in a series, Banksy’s team confirmed to partner network BBC News.

Images of animals Banksy has revealed every morning since August 5 include elephants, monkeys, a goat, a wolf, pelicans and other creatures.

The latest work was posted on Banksy’s social media page on Tuesday morning. Overnight, the London Zoo posted an image of the artwork with the caption:

Is the (big) cat out of the bag? Have our animals been helping make people smile all over London this week?

A day earlier, Banksy showed another work – a rhinoceros that seems to be climbing on the roof of an old silver-coloured car. This graffiti was defaced by a man in a balaclava just hours after the artist presented it.

Banksy had previously submitted an image of a sipping cat on an empty billboard. The painting didn’t last 24 hours and was torn down by workers.

In recent days, Banksy’s work has appeared all over London, from the walls of fish and chip shops to public transport bridges. One of the works, depicting a wolf and painted on a satellite dish, was stolen almost immediately after it appeared.

Banksy himself has not explained the meaning of the works in any way. Some believe that with their help the artist shows that people have spoilt nature so much that now animals have nowhere else to go. Others see the series as a reference to the riots of disgruntled citizens in Britain, whom Banksy allegedly depicted as animals.
