French left party threatens to seek Macron’s resignation over Castets

La France Insoumise (LFI) party publicly warned on Sunday that it will start a procedure to dismiss President Emmanuel Macron. According to the party, Macron is guilty of an “institutional coup against democracy,” BFMTV reported.

The text of the statement was published in La Tribune on Sunday. It says the president should accept the results of the parliamentary elections and appoint Lucie Castets as prime minister, as proposed by the New Popular Front.

“This statement is given the role of a solemn warning,” the signatories, including party leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, party coordinator Manuel Bompard and LFI’s head of deputies Mathilde Panot, wrote.

They said Emmanuel Macron “must know that all constitutional means will be used to dismiss him” because he violates the basic rule of democracy: “in France, the only master is the popular vote.”

In July, the left-wing New Popular Front bloc, which won a majority of parliamentary seats in the election, decided to nominate Paris finance chief Lucie Castets as its candidate for prime minister. However, on July 23, Emmanuel Macron ruled out the possibility of appointing Lucie Castets as prime minister, arguing that she would fail to unite the Assembly.

Macron refused to form a government before the end of the Olympic Games in the country. He accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, but the latter continues in office until a new cabinet is formed.

Parliamentary elections in France ended on July 8 with the victory of the New Popular Front. The bloc of left-wing parties won 182 seats in the National Assembly, while the right-wing coalition led by the National Union won 143 seats.
