Brazil threatens to block X within 24 hours

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Wednesday gave Elon Musk 24 hours to name X’s legal representative in Brazil or face a ban on his social network in the country of 200 million people, according to a statement on the court’s website.

The court issued the summons to Musk, publishing a statement on the Federal Supreme Court’s official X page. The statement said:

In case of non-compliance with the determination, the decision provides for the suspension of the social network’s activities in Brazil.

Musk is indicated to be under investigation as part of an investigation into “alleged offences of obstruction of justice, criminal organisation and incitement to crime.”

On August 17, X announced the closure of its office in Brazil. The company claimed that Judge Alexandre de Moraes had secretly threatened one of the social network’s representatives with arrest if X did not go along with the censorship restrictions.

The company noted, however, that the service would remain available to residents of the country. The press service of the social network said that X does not agree with the demands of Judge Alexander de Moraes, and considered his requests a violation of freedom of speech.

The owner of the social network X Elon Musk told about numerous court orders to block a number of accounts in Brazil in April. The businessman refused to comply with the court orders, considering these requests a violation of freedom of speech.
