Sri Lanka’s leading fully integrated power sector conglomerate, LTL Holdings, is expanding its presence in the power generation sector in Africa. The company plans to establish a $2.2m distribution transformer assembly plant in Tanzania.
Mohamed Jalaldeen Mohamed Nuhuman Marikkar, LTL Holdings’ chief executive officer and executive director, stated:
We are establishing a transformer assembly plant in Tanzania to serve this region, and the next step will be to move into power generation.
The Tanzanian plant with an annual capacity of 1,000 transformers aims to meet the growing demand for transformers in Tanzania and neighbouring countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, and Ethiopia.
The plant will initially operate as an assembly unit for transformer components imported from Sri Lanka at a leased facility. Over the next two years, it will be converted into a full-fledged assembly plant, with plans to expand to a fully operational facility in the future.
LTL Holdings recently commissioned the Sobadhanavi plant, the first gas-fired power plant in Sri Lanka, near Colombo. The company also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India’s Petronet LNG Limited (PLL) to supply liquefied natural gas to its Sobadhanavi power plant.
The Sobadhanavi power plant, is part of the government’s strategy to expand sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions. The strategy aims to add 350 MW to the national grid by the first quarter of 2025.
