The co-operation began at a ceremony in Moscow attended by the presidents of all three countries and broadcast on state television.
The Russian company Gazprom has signed an agreement with Uzbekistan, according to which Russia will supply 9 million cubic metres of the country’s natural gas per day. It will be transited through Kazakhstan.
This is the first time Uzbekistan, a gas producer and exporter, has started importing gas from Russia.
The annual volume amounts to approximately 2.8 billion cubic metres and will help address gas shortages at cold seasons.
Western sanctions that have affected Russia’s energy revenues include price restrictions and an embargo on oil exports by sea imposed due to the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Russian exports were also affected by the disruption of the Nord Stream gas pipeline running from Russia to Europe.
