US approves possible military sale to Taiwan worth about $228 million

The US State Department approved the possible sale of about $228 million worth of foreign military spare parts to Taiwan, according to Reuters.

The return, repair, and reshipment of the spare parts would come from US government stockpiles, the State Department said in a statement.

The US is Taiwan’s most important advocate and arms supplier despite having no official ties to the island. Taiwan’s defence ministry expressed gratitude for the arms sales package, which it said should “become effective” within a month.

The Chinese Communist’s routineised grey zone intrusions have constricted the training space and response time in our air space and maritime areas. The repair and return of the aircraft parts and accessories agreed to be sold by the United States will help maintain the combat readiness and safety of various types of aircraft equipment of the air force.

China, which considers Taiwan its territory, has increased military and political pressure over the past five years to assert its claims. Beijing also stepped up military action in the “grey zone,” using tactics short of actual combat to test and pressure Taiwanese forces.
