Romania will accelerate the purchase of ammunition in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT).
The CSAT chaired by President Klaus Iohannis stressed on Thursday that the neighbouring war led to a change in regional security, which required a revision of national priorities.
The adjustments will be aimed at strengthening Romania’s defence capabilities to meet new threats, including “the increased acquisition of combat ammunition and the gradual build-up of strategic reserves.”
The Council emphasised the need for Romania to develop its domestic industrial capacity to produce modern military equipment. CSAT members also discussed the Romanian Army’s Endowment Plan for 2025-2034.
Additional deterrence and countermeasures were discussed for implementation at the national level and with support from NATO allies.
Participants at the Bucharest 9 format meeting of defence ministers expressed “deep concern” over alleged drones and missiles falling into NATO airspace.
