US mass shooting leaves at least four dead and dozens injured in Alabama

A shooting occurred in the US state of Alabama on Sunday morning, leaving at least four people dead and dozens injured.

Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said that some suffered life-threatening injuries. According to him, officers arrived on the scene shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday “when they observed two adult males and one adult female who was unresponsive on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound.” Arriving medical services confirmed the deaths at the scene, while a fourth victim died at nearby UAB Hospital.

We believe that multiple shooters fired multiple shots on a group of people. Our detectives are working to confirm whether the shooters walked up on the victims or drove by in a vehicle, and that’s why we need the public’s help, he said.

This is the second mass shooting in the city this year. In July, four people were killed at a nightclub. Police have not yet detained anyone in connection with the shooting, urging the public to come forward with any information that could help the investigation.

There’s no one in custody. Rest assured, we are going to do everything we possibly can to make sure that we uncover, identify and hunt down who was ever responsible for preying on our people, he added.

Fitzgerald did not speculate on motive, but said that investigators were “told that all of the victims were out in the open, on either a sidewalk or the street. So these group of shooters fired upon these victims when they were out in the open, we were not told that this happened inside of any business.”

Several agencies are involved in the investigation, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 403 mass shootings across the US this year in which at least four people killed or injured. According to the GVA, at least 12,416 people have lost their lives to gun violence in the US this year alone.
