EU raises humanitarian alarm

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke at the Global Renewables Summit, expressing concern about the growing humanitarian needs due to conflict and climate emergencies, according to EU Reporter.

European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen announced a new €146m funding package aimed at strengthening EU support to the people of Afghanistan, especially women and girls.

At the side event “Investing in the Future: Unlocking Sustainable Financing for Sexual and Reproductive Health,” she also presented a $100m funding mechanism to help the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) ensure that more women and girls have access to modern contraceptives and maternal health medicines.

Meanwhile, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides spoke on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Antimicrobial Stewardship at the High-Level meeting on “IPC and Antimicrobial Stewardship: from policy to implementation at the point of care.”

The EU will focus on Sudan with two events raising the alarm about the situation in the country and the region, where millions of people are facing starvation. Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell will reiterate the need for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire, as well as the establishment of monitoring mechanisms calling for respect for international humanitarian law.

The European Commission will also hold a summit on the EU’s efforts to combat breast cancer and on Universal Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Strategies. International humanitarian law should play a key role in armed conflicts, said European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič.

EU representatives will also hold the Ministerial Consultation Meeting on the Plastic Pollution Treaty with Canada and Norway. Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra will be responsible for the meetings on sea level rise and the European Net Zero Strategy.

The wide range of events with the participation of European Commissioners is linked to the efforts of the bloc’s officials to address the humanitarian disaster.
