Two women charged over seizure of gold worth €1.4m

Two women were charged on Wednesday in connection with the seizure of €1.4 million worth of gold bars, €460,000 in cash and €210,000 worth of drugs in Dublin, Irish media reported.

Two women, aged 30 and 50, have been charged and are due to appear at Blanchardstown District Court. This follows searches of residential and business premises on 27 and 28 September.

Farhats Bathijevs, 55, already appeared in Blanchardstown District Court on Monday in connection with the incident. The detainee with the Latvian citizenship faced ten charges. Three of the charges related to money laundering and three relate to theft and fraud involving the use of false documents.

He also faced two charges of possession of ecstasy and cocaine, and two charges of possession of those drugs with intent to sell or distribute.

Judge David McHugh ordered that the defendant be remanded in custody and sent to Cloverhill Prison until the next hearing, which will take place via video link on October 4. Police report that the investigation is ongoing.
