Romanian-processed products to benefit from mark-up restrictions

Processed products in Romania would benefit from a cap on trade margins, Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu announced.

The Romanian agriculture ministry is negotiating with retailers and processors on specific products, with the draft law “90 per cent” ready, according to Euractiv.

I will try to persuade Romania’s retail sector, processors, and farmers that this ordinance benefits the entire agri-food chain.

Barbu said that limiting commercial mark-ups on thousands of products would not destabilise the market.

Temporary measures to limit price increases on 14 major categories of food products were introduced on 1 August. Three months later, the government extended the price cap, broadening the list of products covered by the scheme.

The minister also emphasised that the profits of retailers and processors had increased compared to the period before the emergency capping measures came into effect.
